An Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) is a Social Worker who has completed a minimum of four years of university education, undertaken additional specialised mental health training, and achieved accreditation through the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). Although AMHSWs are not regulated by AHPRA, their AASW accreditation requires rigorous standards of clinical expertise and ethical practice, enabling them to assess and treat a wide range of psychological and mental health difficulties. This assessment and accreditation framework is formally recognised by the Australian Government. AMHSWs are eligible to provide services under Medicare when clients have a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan.
